I wanted to give you a peek inside a meeting I had recently with a new client to plan an event they are doing for their safety managers. They are flying them in from all over to put on a three-day safety conference. As we sat down to talk about it they said, "We don’t want this to be the typical safety conference. We want this to be fun! We want to create an experience with them so they look forward to this conference each year." As you can imagine, this was music to my ears!I asked them, what is the name of your event? What's the tagline going to be? What are you doing for the invitation? If you want them to get excited about it, you need to start with their first impressions of the event. How are you setting the tone to show them this is NOT your normal safety conference? It was amazing to me because it was as if a light bulb went off when they heard what I said. They hadn't even thought through the initial perception. They asked for me to help come up with ideas for these elements. We looked at their event further. Started talking about what does it look like when they enter the room? What is the experience during the event? What games and activities can they play to draw the attendees in to get them more excited? What else can they do to get the attendees more engaged, laughing, talking, participating? Then we started talking about what the swag bag should include. Everyone loves a great swag bag! They wanted something quirky, and something that’s unexpected included in theirs. Something that would make the participants exclaim, "I got this! I can’t believe it.” Something that would get people talking. You know what I always say, “You have to give them something to talk about or they won’t talk about you!” We came up with some ideas for that too! Then we looked at the whole experience, from before the event, at the event, after they left the event. I encourage you to go through this when you’re creating your events too. Interlace experiences into your events that make people laugh, get more engaged, look forward to attending. Doing this will help build deeper relationships between all those at the event and they will look forward to your next one. Remember, it’s the year of the Hygge life!
